President Vassiliou has worked tirelessly to build international support for the reunification of Cyprus. During his fourth visit to the United States. I am hopeful President Vassiliou will receive the assurance of United States support for his plan to end the division of Cyprus. Mr. Speaker. as my colleagues know. since Turkish troops illegally invaded Cyprus in July 1974. Since then this island has been the setting for one of the worlds most intractable international conflicts. Today. 35.000 Turkish troops occupy northern Cyprus and 200.000 Greek Cypriots are refugees in their own land. Mr. Speaker. during the last 2 years. we have witnessed great changes occur throughout the world.
