U.N. peacekeepers were the recipient of the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize. It was an award that was richly deserved. Given the current reduction in international tensions. a new spirit of cooperation has emerged. East and West are looking for common solutions to common problems. This spirit has been reflected by a more active role for the United Nationa in general. and U.N. peacekeeping activities in particular. The peacekeeping potential of the United Nations has been vividly demonstrated during the Persian Gulf crisis. For hundreds of thousands. even millions. of refugees. U.N. peacekeepers are the buffer that separates them from the remaining armies of Saddam Hussein. Still.
