April 24. 1991. marks the 76th anniversary of the onset of the Armenian genocide. Perhaps as many as 1 million Armenians perished at the hands of the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923. I think its important that we in Congress take time on this day to remember that terrible tragedy. The forcible deportations. starvation. massacres. and other inhumane treatments to which the Armenians were subjected have been welldocumented by historians. It is unfortunate that political and nationalistic controversies still prevent us from officially recognizing this event. But I am encouraged by the fact that we seem. perhaps. to have learned from that tragedy.
