On the night of April 24. 1915. over 200 Armenian religious. political. and intellectual leaders of the Armenian community in Constantinople were arrested. exiled from the capital city. and executed. The representatives of the Armenian nation in the Ottoman Empire were silenced in a single night. This tragic event began the systematic policy of deportation and extermination of the Armenian community by the Ottoman Empire. Prior to 1914. over 2 million Armenians lived In the region. Between 1915. and 1923. a million and a half Armenian men. women. and children were murdered by the government of the Ottoman Empire. By the end of 1923. the entire Armenian population of Anatolia and western Armenia had either been killed or deported. Today the Armenian people continue to face hardship. The effects of the tragic 1988 earthquake which left half a million people homeless ore still being felt. and the ethnic civil war with neighboring Azerbaijan In January. 1990. was quelled by Soviet troops.
