Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020025026

Here too Mexico has made great strides. beefing up its enforcement budget by 636 percent in the last year alone. adding 100 inspectors to monitor Mexican industry. These enforcement efforts are being felt across the country. Over 5.000 inspection visits were conducted in the last 2 years. resulting in 980 temporary or permanent plant shutdowns. Mr. Speaker. without a freetrade agreement. Mexicos economy will grow stagnant. government revenues will fall. and environmental enforcement and regulation will deteriorate. A United StatesMexico freetrade agreement is in the best interest of both our countries. It will create Jobs. it will create capital. it will bring less immigration into this country. A good freetrade agreement is good for both countries. environmentally. jobwise and tradewise.
