Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020024930

Government to enter our country for permanent residence. Mr. Zakhadn continues to be denied an exit visa. In February 1990. the Soviet Government demanded that Zakharins wife. Idna. divorce her husband if she and her two children wanted to leave the country. When the couple appealed to the International community. the Soviet Government reconsidered and Idna and the two children were allowed to leave. This case Is even more urgent for the Zakhadns because one of their sons has a health problem that cannot be treated In the U.S.S.R.. and the wife and two children must leave Immediately for treatment in the United States. Despite hunger strike protests by both Irina and Venlamin Zakharln. the Sovet Government continues to refuse Venlamins request for an exit visa. and the family must. out of necessity for the childs health. be separated. This heartbreaking story Is only one of many existing cases of Soviet refusniks who have been denied the right to leave the U.S.S.R.
