Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020011791

Members might be interested in knowing that citizenship was voted here. the offer was sent to Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricos governing body at that time rejected it unanimously and said. "We appreciate it. We think youre being nice about it. but we would rather not become citizens at this point." And they were forced to take citizenship anyway. That was because we needed to send them into World War I. and it was kind of embarrassing sending noncitizens into the First World War. Since then. Puerto Ricans from the island. not to mention the ones like myself from over here. but from the island who live there. have been to World War I.
