He was a wellknown adversary of needless spending. attacking ballooning figures with the pinprick of conscience and common sense. However. his thrift was always balanced with compassion. and he did a great deal for the poor and underprivileged both in his State and on the national level. Congressman Conte was born to immigrant parents in Pittsfield. MA. in 1921. He was no stranger to hard work. beginning his career as a machinist and then serving in the Seabees in World War Il After the war. he attended Boston College and Boston College Law School on the GI bill.
