Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020010328

They proceeded with the adoption. When it became final in November of 1987 they were excited and wanted to be certain that John received all the opportunities they had provided their other children. They realized they needed to change Johns immigration status since he was now the son of U.S. citizens. Only then did they become aware of the fact that the immigration law does not recognize the adoption of a child over the age of 16 as conveying immediate relative status to the child. John could not remain in the United States unless he was a student. The family was very upset and concerned.
