Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020008983

Even today. redress payments have not been made to most of the internees. In times of war and periods of tension. we have an unfortunate tendency to fail sometimes to live up to our ideals. Today. I am hearing reports about violence directed at American citizens and immigrants from the Middle East inspired by Americas anger toward Saddam Hussein. Fortynine years after Executive Order 9066. we are perilously close to the fears many in the Nation had about JapaneseAmericans. We should not be confusing the enemy abroad with people among us whose only connection with the events overseas is a similar ancestry.
