I support this legislation because it provides critically needed family reunification measures which continue to be the cornerstone of our immigration law and policy. This conference report continues the process of reforming our immigration laws by attempting to reduce some of the serious immigration backlogs U.S. citizens and permanent residents face when trying to unite their families. This reform legislation emphasizes the importance that immigration and diversity play In the Nations culture and economy. As the United States tries to increase our competitiveness by training and building within our borders. we can find an excellent resource In potential immigrants. .The conference report includes several important provisions Including one I authored to increase the immigration quota for Hong Kong. I am also very supportive of the deletion of the pilot program for a national identification card system.
