Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010232611

Madam Speaker. I rise in support of this important bill. This bill. which adds humanrights conditions to the emigration conditions that already exist for the extending of MFN status. is vitally important to improving human rights. It is my hope that this goal will be strengthened by the House adopting four amendments to this bill. those offered by the gentleman from Virginia . a religiousliberty condition to extending mostfavorednation trade status. the gentleman from Illinois requiring China to live up to its promises of democracy and free enterprise when Hong Kong reverts to Chinese control. the gentlewoman from California addressing the issue of those Chinese imprisoned and executed after Tiananmen Square. and my amendment which establishes a set of humanrights principles for United States businesses operating in China. All of these amendments substantially improve this bill.
