Army on December 15. 1945. and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on June 7. 1947. he subsequently served as a reservist in the U.S. Navy from October 1947 to October 1952. Although for most of his Senate career Mr. Hester specialized in Social Security. Medicare. Medicaid. social welfare. and public health laws. he worked for a number of years in the fields of labor law and veterans laws. In addition. he was involved for lesser periods in a number of other fields. including immigration law. civil rights. education. and taxation. Mr. Hester is married to the former Melissa Hood Fuller. of Athens.
