While much of the worlds attention is rightly focussed on the crisis in the Persian Gulf. the international community seems to have quietly forgotten the genuine tragedy that continues to unfold in the West African nation of Liberia. After 10 months of brutal violence and civil war. the Liberian conflict continues with no immediate signs of a peaceful resolution. One of the most tragic aspects of this situation Is the plight of the hundreds of thousands of Liberian refugees who have been uprooted from their homessome trapped In the besieged capital of Monrovia. others forced into exile in neighboring countries. I would like to commend to the attention of my colleagues two recent articles about the continuing crisis in Liberia. These two articlesby Holly Burkhalter of Human Rights Watch and Hiram A. Ruiz with U.S. Committee for Refugeescall attention to the extraordinary hardship and suffering of Liberian refugees. These articles also point to the urgent need for a more generous response from the International community. including the United States. Ms.
