Most are new to American society and many do not speak English as a first language. This group is in particular need of statutory language that clearly protects them from abusive spouses taking advantage of the necessity of filing a joint petition at the end of the 2 year period. A "yes" vote on H.R. 4300 says "no" to the domestic violence which terrorizes thousands of immigrant spouses and their children. I urge all of my colleagues to support the bill. giving hope to battered spouses and children that they. too. might soon realize the American dream of living in freedom and safety.
