Shortly after receiving his J.C.D. (summa cum laude) he retumed to the United States. Continuing to further his education. he received his M.A. in political science from Columbia University in 1962. In 1968 he continued his teaching career. this time as a professor of canon law at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in New York. During this time he also served as the director of the Catholic Migration and Refugee Office and the chaplain for the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy. On June 29. 1988 he received Pallium from Pope John Paul II. In 1989 he was appointed member of the board of trustees at Catholic University of America.
