This comes in spite of the fact that the United States trade deficit with China has doubled in the last year and could exceed $10 billion this year. $10 billion from China alone. So if we are going to have mostfavorednation trade status with China and if it is going to benefit China to the detriment of our businesses in the United Statesin some cases trade with China is good for businesses in the United Statesbut a trade deficit of $10 billion is not good for our economy. And then it is important that we stand by what we have said in the past about most favored nation and it should not be extended to countries which do not have a free economy and which do not respect the freedom of residents and the right to emigrate of its people. Human rights are important in our political life. in our international life. if they are important with some countries. they should be important with China as well. The facts lead up to only one conclusion. that despite administration assertions to the contrary. be it in the World Bank. in the trade policy or in the State Department letters denying political repression in China. little in China has changed economically or socially since the brutal repression of 1989.
