Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010207156

In my home State of Minnesota. for example. this past year. fewer than one eligible child in four is being served through the States 34 Head Start agencies. Of the estimated 22.411 children ages 3 to 5 who are at or below the Federal poverty level. fewer than 6.000 were served in fiscal year 1990. This included 5.039 children served by Head Start programs run by CAP agencies. nonprofits. and school districts during the regular school year. 300 children who were served under Head Start programs aimed at migrant children. and Just under 600 were provided Head Start services on seven Minnesota Indian Reservations. I am pleased that the Minnesota Legislature has taken steps on its own to expand Head Start services. In 1988 it began with a modest appropriation of $400.000.
