Most importantly. it promotes the best interests of children. here in our country and around the world. The convention represents a consensus that there are some univorsally accepted basic rights which are essential for any childs wellbeing and full development. It calls for protection from neglect and abuse. and for access to adequate living standards. health care. and education. It addresses the situation of children who are especially vulnerable because they are victims of war. as refugees or as child soldiers. The United States should be taking the lead in making this treaty a reality. More than 30 other countries have ratified the convention since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly last fall.
