Nowhere is this more apparent than in Germany where the people have persevered and brought about monumental changes in every aspect of their lives. It is appropriate now more than ever to recognize the contribution of GermanAmericans during this time of global transformation. Since the arrival of the first German immigrants in the United States on October 6. 1683. their number has grown to an estimated 52 million. making them one of the largest ethnic communities in the United States. GermanAmericans have contributed immensely to all facets of American life and culture. and they will continue to contribute to the development. life and culture of our great country. They will work for and will support the Government of the United States. its democratic principles. and the freedom of all people everywhere.
