Five hundred thousand Armenans lost their homes in the earthquake on December 7. 1988. Many still live in tents. Conditions have become so serious that about 300 Armenians took refuge for more than 5 months earlier in the year in the Armenians Consulate in Moscow. They slept on the floor and suffered from dysentery: some went on a hunger strike for several weeks to protest these wretched conditions. Soviet authorities refused to find them homes for fear of attracting more Impoverished refugees from Armenia. Homelessness in Armenia is only part of the problem.
