Since the signing of this declaration. thousands of Hong Kong residents have left this region. Last year alorn. approximately 50.000 Hong Kong residents left in mass exodus. Current figures estimate that approximately a thousand people a day are leaving Hong Kong. The suppression of last springs prodemocracy movement in Tiananmen Square. and throughout China. further exacerbated the mass emigration. This resolution recognizes and offers Hong Kong residents the right of abode otside Hong Kong without having to leave the territory prior to 1997 to retain that right. Its passage will certainly ensure the Hong Kong residents that their freedoms will be protected ater 1997.
