Fundamental to the peace process Is the ability of the governments In the region. with the support of the international community. to resolve the many refugee. humanitarian. and human rights Issues that threaten peace and stability. In order to assess progress on these issues. and to determine what further the United States should do to assist. the Subcommittee on Immigration and Refugee Affairs. which I chair. sent last month a staff mission to the area. In cooperation with my colleague. Senator SIMPSON. the ranking member on the subcommittee. we asked Jerry Tinker. the subcommittees staff director.
