I am proud to lend my voice to the remembrance of an event that the world should not Ignore: The illegal Turkish invasion of. the island republic of Cyprus on July 16. 1974. 6.000 Greek Cypriots were killed in this surprise attack. and onethird of the population was driven from their homes. I am saddened by this anniversary because the people of Cyprus continue to live in a divided country. The Turkish occupation of a portion of Cyprus has separated family members and forced many Cypriots to become refugees in their own homeland. Unfortunately. United Nations sponsored peace talks have been on hold since June of 1989.
