Although the Portuguese work ethic was important to the islands. their endeavors outside of the workplace hold their most enduring contributions. The Portuguese were committed to their community. Not only did they want a better way of life for themselves. but their aspirations extended beyond their families to the people with whom they lived and worked. To help other Portuguese. they joined in Old World fraternal service organizations known as Holy Ghost societies. The societies came to the aid of widows. orphans. and families in need. The Portuguese also took on political offices. Secretary and advisor to the first ruler to unify the Hawaiian Islands. King Kamehameha I. was a Portuguese immigrant. Dr. Joao. dCastro.
