With the Berlin Wall crumbled and much of Eastern Europe now open to democracy. we cannot overlook this gross human rights violation. Through pressure from the United States. we must demand that President Gorbachev end these vicious acts of harassment and violence. In a related matter. the Soviet Government recently rejected a plea from Secretary of State James Baker to permit direct flights to Israel for Soviet Jews. Of course. without such flights. thousands of Soviet Jews are trapped in the Soviet Union. While Gorbachev has finally permitted Soviet Jews to emigrate. he has repeatedly balked on opening air routes to Israel. In essence. Gorbachev has not liberated Soviet Jews.
