Speaker. in 1939. a boat named the St. Louis was off the shores of Miami. Its cargo was 930 Jewish Immigrants fleeing from Nazi Germany. As the world closely watched. our Nation argued about what the proper course of action should be. From some quarters we were then told our national securitypolitical and economicwould be imperiled if we let the St. Louis unload its human cargo. From other quarters we heard that to have the ship turned away would be the greatest sin against what this Nation stands for. As we all know. shortterm interests. racism. lack of vision and integrity drove our Nations policy that day and the Jew immigrants were sent away.
