In recent months. there have been many reports of open and growing antiSemitism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europethe socalled dark side of glasnost. The cemetery desecrations demonstrate that while we clearly must keep a close eye on events in that rapidly changing area of the world. we must also remain vigilant in our watch for religiously and racially motivated attacks in other areas. We must never forget that. in the past. xenophobia signaled the beginning of some of the darkest periods in the history of all of Europe. The reaction of the majority of the French to these attacks has been heartening. tens of thousands of French citizens. both Jews and nonJews. have gathered together to protest the desecrations and to condemn the rhetoric of groups like JeanMarie Le Pens National Front. And it is encouraging to see all the major political parties. with the exception of the National Front. joining the protests.
