Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010151677

We support the struggle by the people of Burma for a democratic system that guarantees fundamental rights of freedom and democracy. not the current military regime of repression and intolerance. American influence inside Burma is limited. The influence we have. however. should be used to support the courageous efforts of the Burmese people. The Bush administration should waste no time in conveying this message to those who oppose the restoration of democracy in Burma. I urge the administration to support economic sanctions against Burmas military dictatorship. and to take concrete steps to support the efforts of international and private voluntary organizations seeking to aid Burmese refugees. In addition. the administration should mobilize other governments in the region. Thailand.
