New Jersey is indeed proud that we have elected the first ItalianAmerican as our Governor. A former Member of Congress. Governor James Florio proudly identifies himself as an ItalianAmerican whose roots are a reminder of the efforts. sacrifices. and struggles of Italian immigrant families in becoming citizens of this country and in the success of their children and grandchildren in fulfilling the American dream. In recognition of the achievements of ItalianAmericans and of Christopher Columbus discovery. Congress last year designated the month of October as "ItallanAmerican Heritage Month." All across this Nation. festivals. concerts. and a celebration of the arts took place to honor the ItalianAmerican people.
