Thomas Wright and Joshua Stevens came and began producing firearms in Chicopee Falls. The plant has now surrendered to urban renewal. The Stevens Arms Co. produced the famous Maynard Rifle. The Mexican War in 1845 led to increased production. Employment at the company rose to nearly 100. On April 29. 1848 the Massachusetts General Court approved legislation to establish the town of Chicopee. In 1858 at least 60% of the mill population was Irish and the immigrant Irish. in 1859. constructed a magnificent church on South Street in CabotVille. On the South Street land. the parish soon constructed a school. followed by the construction of a fine rectory. By 1860.
