I would like to recognize the congregation of St. Stephens Church of Johnstown. PA. which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on October 2. Many Eastern Europeans were among the immigrants to the Johnstown area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. searching for new jobs and the unlimited opportunities that the United States had to offer. These new immigrants worked in the steelmills and coal mines. which formed the backbone of the rapid industrial development taking place in western Pennsylvania. They also brought their faith with them from their old homes. a faith which led to the founding of St. Stephens Parish.
