Guyana was formerly a colony of Great Britain from 1831at which time it assumed the name British Guianaand remained under British rule until it attained its independence on May 26. 1966. It was declared a republic on February 23. 1970. The new country took the name Guyana. an aboriginal Indian word meaning "Land of Many Waters". When slavery was abolished in 1834. exslaves refused to work for their former masters. even for wages. They left their plantations and established their own village communities. Immigrants were then brought from many parts of the world. such as Portugal. the United States. China. and India. Today the countrys population reflects its Chinese.
