Prior to this. the United Nations parition plan. accepted by the Zionists and rejected by the surrounding Arab States. had called for Jerusalem to become an international city under U.N. control. Instead. the Arab countries attacked the newborn State of Israel and at the end of the fighting. the Kingdom of Jordan controlled a portion of the city of Jerusalem. Over the next 18 years. the city of Jerusalem grew up around the battle lines. New communities grew up on all sides of Jerusalem to house the hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees and immigrants who came from all over the world. In 1967. after a number of belligerent acts by President Nassar of Egypt. Israel launched a preemptive attack against Egypt.
