Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010123280

This anniversary is one of great importance not only to Lihuanians and to LithuanianAmericans. but to all people concerned with freedom. On February 16. 1918. the Lithuanian people. after subjugation by czarist Russia and imperial Germany. gained control of their own country. But after only 21 short years. this flourishing democratic nation again fell victim to its totalitarian neighbors. Both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded the country. Stalin forcibly incorporated Lithuania into the Soviet Union in 1940. undertaking mass deportations and executions of Lithuanian leaders. Now. almost 50 years since Stalins invasion. Lithuanians are still fighting for their independence.
