Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010122089

While the rise of Russian antiSemitism is not well appreciated in the West. Soviet Jews are keenly aware of this frightful trend. Many of the 70.000 Jews who emigrated from the Soviet Union last year did so to escape virulent antiSemitism. Growing numbers of Soviet Jews will quite understandably continue to flee in fear of a pogrom inspired by Russian rightwing nationalists seeking to "deZionize" the Soviet Union. Just today it was reported that Moscow prosecutors have begun criminal proceedings against Pamyat for "inciting national and racial hatred and strife." This action is a start. but we must continue to keep our attention focused on this very disturbing and quite ugly trend.
