Speech #1010121366

Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar in Initiating talks between President Vassiliou and Rauf Danktash. the Turkish Cypriot leader. However. our hopes that Cyprus would soon be reunified have been diminished by the intransigence of Danktash and the subsequent breakdown of the sponsored talks. The Cyprus issue is not simply a parochial dispute between Greece and Turkey. it involves the rule of law and the fundamental principles of democratic government. There are presently 35.000 Turkish troops and 60.000 Turkish colonists in Northern Cyprus. 200.000 Greek Cypriots remain refugees in their own land. Mr. Speaker. a barbed wire barricade commonly referred to as the "Green Line" presently physically divides the islan. nation of Cyprus.
