Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010119284

A devastating problem inhibiting the tremendous potential or nearly 23 million Americans. illiteracy deserves our forthright attention. Unfortunately. illiteracy continues to grow in this country. This is consequence of two trends. the growing number of immigrants and refugees who do not speak native English. and the disturbingly large number of American students who fail in our educational system. Across the Nation some 3.600 students drop out of school every day. placing them at clear risk at failing throughout their life. Probably more disturbing. are the large number of students who complete high school. yet. seem to get almost nothing out of it.
