Cambodian. Vietnamese. these individuals and families have come to seek a better life in the United States. Consequently. their immigration has also presented them with a unique set of problems that we have not seen before. especially among the children of these new immigrants. As the children of these families learn English and become more proficient in the language. they are soon called upon by their parents and families to represent. interpret. and even mediate for the family in their newly adopted culture. In this scenario. the decisionmaking process within the family shifts in focus to the children as the family becomes more dependent on their language proficiency.
