Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010117002

It is a vote about the image of a brave young man standing in front of an advancing tank. The actions of the Chinese dictatorship are to be condemned and Americas support and protection should be extended to those young advocates of freedom and democracy. Todays vote has taken on symbolic significance beyond the strict confines of American Immigration law. It is a vote intended to send a loud and clear message to the Chinese Government and the American Government that the people of the United States are shocked by the brutality of Tiananmen Square. To the Chinese Government it sends a signal that there are basic standards of human rights which must be respected to be a full member of the international community.
