Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010116958

Chinese students currently residing in the United States have a wellfounded fear that they will be persecuted if forced to return to China at this time. and they deserve the full protection of the worlds most powerful democracy. On November 30. 1989. President George Bush vetoed the Emergency Chinese Immigration Relief Act of 1989. This bill would have allowed all Chinese nationals now in the United States on student visas to remain and work in this country for a 4year period without fear of deportation. By vetoing this important piece of legislation. President Bush allowed the Chinese Government to coerce him with the threat that future educational exchanges would be severely curtailed if the United States adopted a policy of protection for Chinese students.
