Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010116932

Mr. President. I rise in strong opposition to President Bushs veto of H.R. 2712. the Emergency Chinese Immigration Relief Act. and in support of the motion to override the Presidents veto. In the months before June 3. Americansindeed. the entire worldwatched with admiration as the students and workers in Tiananmen Square demonstrated peacefully for freedom. The students struggle for freedom and democracy so closely resembled that of our own forefathers more than two centuries ago. and the similarity could not go unnoticed when the students constructed their own Goddess of Democracy in the center of the square. But hope turned to horror. and the students cries for freedom turned to screams of pain and grief for those brutally gunneddown by the socalled Peoples Army. ordered to the scene by Chinese leaders Deng Xiaoping.
