Many of us in the Senate. including this Senator. introduced legislation back in June seeking protection for the Chinese students in this country. At that time I felt it was necessary to correct the flaws in the Bush administrations 1year extension plan. and H.R. 2712 does just that. H.R. 2712 would grant. by law. Mr. President. a 4year extension of student visas for Chinese nationals. It would allow. by law. a waiver of the 2year home residency requIrement for Chinese students on J visas. and it would allow. by law. all Chinese students to accept the administrations original deferred enforcement departure status. without prejudicing their entitlement to any future immigration benefit they might seek under existing law.
