Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010116559

Mr. Speaker. I strongly support the legislation before us today that will extend the visas of Chinese students here in the United States. I hope that both the House and Senate will vote to override President Bushs veto of this bill by a strong margin. This legislation will accomplish two things. First. it will eliminate the 2year foreign residence requirement for these students. Second. It will modlj the Extended Deferred Departure program to allow the students who qualify to apply for permanent resident status. I feel that these measures are of utmost importance to Chinese students who are here in the United States and fearful of returning to China today.
