President. we must not overlook those children at risk of abuse. neglect. and exploitation. Reported cases of physical and sexual child abuse are on the rise worldwide. Neither can we forget those children subject to the horrors of war. Between 60 and 70 percent of all the refugees in the world are children. And the refugee camps in which millions of children grow up leave them at risk of chronic infectious diseases. malnutrition. and physical and mental handicaps. The recent events in San Salvador serve as a potent reminder of the tragedies facing children caught in armed conflicts. Last week alone. as many as 50.000 people were displaced by bombing and strafing attacks.
