Never in our history has there been a gift so grand to the Smithsonian. It is the greatest ethnological collection in the world. And as such. is priceless in its significance. If it were possible to assign a monetary value. it would certainly be in the billions. George Gustav Heye. the son of a German immigrant. made his fortune in Standard Oil. and began over a halfcentury of collecting in 1897. Heye employed scores of anthropologists to collect artifacts from all over the Western Hemisphere. He continued with this passion until his death in 1957.
