Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010093999

Mr. Speaker. my good friend. the distinguished chairman of the Rules Committee. has done an able job explaining this rule. It makes in order the consideration of H.R. 45. a bill to provide temporary protected status to Salvadorans and Nicaraguans presently living in the United States. The rule further makes in order an amendmentinthenatureofasubstitute as an original text of this legislation. This amendment. to which I just referred. will extend temporary protected status to Chinese citizens presently living in the United States. I think this is of concern to all of us in this chamber. This is part of a continuing effort here in Congress to have our country respond in a necessary and appropriate way to the ongoing repression and tyranny in mainland China.
