Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010080499

Mr. President. if I may address the managers of the bill. As the managers know. the Senator from Wyoming and I intended to offer an amendment to earmark $3 million for a muchneeded public education campaign to prevent immigrationrelated discrimination. Unfortunately. due to the fact that we are up to the budget agreement levels already under this bill. this amendment is not possible at this time. It is still my hope that the Attorney General can come up with the needed funding. But Senator SIMPSON and I wrote to the Attorney General about this in May. and to date that funding has not been made available. I know the managers of the bill appreciate our goal. And I would like to ask the managers if they will make their best efforts to locate funding in conference of at least $1 million for this purpose. preferably for use by the Justice Departments Office of Special Counsel for immigrationrelated discrimination.
