Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010077784

He has served our Nation as a reporter. and although that is not an official position under our system. it is a role that is tacitly recognized and honored in the first amendment. Steves work is of a caliber that respects and honors the purposes of the first amendment and it is particularly fitting that he marks his anniversary at this time. because it is a time when the worth of the first amendment is being acknowledged worldwide as never before. Not all of us know it. because Steve has so thoroughly assimilated American culture and traditions. but his family emigrated to this country from their homeland of Czechoslovakia. Indeed. it was Steves unvarnished Czechoslovakian name which led to his untimely detention by an overly enthusiastic FBI agent when he was detailed to cover Khrushchevs visit to this country In 1959. That detention may be the only time Steve has failed to fulfill his duty as a reporter honorably. fairly. and well In the three decades that he has covered the Congress.
