Speech #1010077386

Mr. Speaker. I rise today to pay tribute to a group of immigrants who have brought their culture and wealth of experience to the State of Rhode Island and our Nation against the odds. As the 40th anniversary of the last mass Ukrainian immigration approaches. I would like to briefly recognize the history of Ukrainian Immigrants in Rhode Island. Ukrainian immigration to the United States began well over 100 years ago occurring in three major time periods: prior to World War I. during the interwar period and post World War II. During the post World War II period over 85.000 new emigrants settled in the United States. These people were mostly victims of German concentration and displaced persons camps. The United Ukrainian American Relief Committee was founded in 1944 with the aim of providing assistance to the new immigrants arriving from Europe. This organization played a vital role in the settling of the new Immigrants In Ukrainian communities which had already been established. This group of immigrants has played a large role in the development of Ukrainian culture in Rhode Island as well as showing us all the true spirit of survival which is a testament to their courage. I would like to wish the Ukrainian immigrants the best on their 40th anniversary and thank them for their contributions as citizens of the United States of America.
